Day 12 – Kakamas

No travelling today, it’s going to be a rest day, but we’ll keep busy anyway. Our first stop is at the Augrabies falls, “the big noise” as the local khoe-san people used to call them. SIxth tallest on earth, they originate as the Orange River plunges down a 200 mt leap into an 18 Km long gorge carved in thegranite valley floor.
Although many diamond beds occur along the Orange River, according to legend the richest lies hidden under the churning waters at the bottom of the gorge. But the most precious gift from the mighty Orange, South Africa’s largest river, is water. Thanks to it, this region known as Green Kalahari harbours thriving vineyards which yield 10% of the country’s wine production.
